Being a youth sports coach can be a fun experience. Succeeding in the role is all about being a level-headed, knowledgeable and approachable person. The best coaches make the entire experience fun from start to finish for each and every one of the kids who participate. Here are four skills to help you be a great youth soccer coach.

Patience

The most common mistake youth coaches make is assuming they are the local equivalent of a professional soccer coach with prestige and fame on the line. The plain truth is the entire endeavor is all about youngsters having fun, which means a good coach should be equipped with a reservoir of patience. It is important to understand mistakes need to be corrected, but they are obviously going to be made on a regular basis, and they need not be reprimanded.

Knowledge

Knowing the rules, terminology and basic strategy of soccer is essential for any good soccer coach. Even the most well intending people with strong communication skills will generally fail if they do not know the ins and outs of moving a soccer ball down the field and putting it into the goal. Although winning a game has decreased in overall value in recent years, the plain truth remains that kicking a ball through a goal is a satisfying feeling, and one every player should be able to experience at some point in time.

Organization

From identifying the strengths and weaknesses of each player to understanding which players to put in the game in which situations, a quality youth soccer coach is also organized. Organization is especially important when it comes to all players being given a fair opportunity to get playing time on the field, and parents who feel that their kids are getting shortchanged will likely be quick to voice their opinion. Proper record-keeping of minutes, practices attended and other relevant facts will go a long way toward justifying all decisions, and wearing stylish and comfortable soccer scarves can help to identify the coach as the person in charge.

Knack For Fun

Having fun while playing a recreational youth sport is of the utmost importance. The best and most popular coaches who are remembered by the players long after the final game has ended usually know how to have fun while getting their messages across. Keeping things lighthearted will typically create a positive environment for the team during practices and games, which will translate into a season full of success and good times.

One of the best things about the weather warming up is that it means that we can get out of the house. No longer are we restricted to sitting inside and watching sports on our televisions. Now we can actually get outside and enjoy sports ourselves in the fresh air and sunshine. Summer means getting up off the couch and getting into shape by playing some exciting sports. Here are three of the best summer sports that you can try this year.

1. Beach Volleyball

This is one of the very best sports to try in the summer. First of all, playing beach volleyball is a whole lot of fun. In fact, many bars around the country are actually adding beach volleyball courts on to their establishments. There is also the added bonus of being able to look at beautiful people in swimsuits jumping around on the sand while you play.

Also, beach volleyball is a tremendous workout. Running and jumping in the sand is an amazing workout for your legs. The shifting sand forces you to use a lot of stabilizer muscles that you don’t activate much during the course of your regular activities.

Volleyball is a very accessible sport as well. People of all ages and physical conditions can enjoy it. Also, you can always keep playing volleyball through the winter with an indoor league.

2. Basketball

Although most people associate basketball with being in a gym, there is nothing finer than playing a game of hoops on the blacktop. The thrills of being outside in the sunshine cannot be beat. It also makes it interesting when you have to factor the wind into your three-point shots. Basketball is a great sport to pick up because it can be played with almost any number of competitors, making it one of the most versatile sports. Also, basketball can be played indoors when summer comes to an end.

3. Biking

This is one of the most wonderful summer sports that you can do. Every good-sized town has a biking club that you can join to learn more about riding. These organizations put together group rides at least once a week, which makes it easy to meet new people and to have a lot of fun. Also, biking is one of the most diverse sports. You can try road racing, mountain biking, trail riding or simply cruising. Biking is a great sport that is also a great workout, you are guaranteed to be sore after picking up this summer hobby. Learn more on taking proper measures to care for your sore muscles. Anyone who is looking for a great workout that is a lot of fun should try riding a bike this summer.

ESPN wasn’t always the worldwide leader, and some of the events that have been broadcast over the years make for an entertaining watch. Prior to Major League Baseball, the National Football League, and the National Basketball Association, ESPN would broadcast niche sports. Let’s look at the five most interesting sports we’ve seen televised on ESPN.

5. National Scrabble Championship

A head scratcher for ESPN, the final rounds of the popular word game were broadcast from 2004 through 2006. The highlight of Scrabble’s broadcast history on ESPN occurred when 2004 champion Josh Wright attempted to use an inappropriate word, which by Scrabble rules would normally be allowed, but was sanctioned as not allowed-because of the event being broadcast on ESPN. It was a sad day for all die-hard scrabble fans.

4. The World Series of Poker

Over the past several years, ESPN has found it’s way into Sin City to broadcast multiple rounds of the World Series of Poker. Broadcasts popularized the idea that anyone from any walk of life can end up at the final table trying to take home the big money and a bracelet. What actually makes the event entertaining is the banter back and forth between Norman Chad and Lon McEachern and other players.

3. Bassmaster

Bassmaster is another sport which loosely uses the term “sport.” ESPN has loyally been involved with professional sport anglers for quite awhile now, covering the biggest tournaments, the most successful fisherman, safety, and equipment like butterfly knives. Watching the pros reel in those big fish and gut them is oddly entertaining. ESPN has even developed fantasy fishing for the diehards within the sport.

2. The National Spelling Bee

Hosting the final round of the spelling bee each year from Maryland, ESPN has taken children who are extremely good at spelling and made them pseudo-celebrities. ESPN broadcasters have taken several of the most difficult words to spell and used them in Sportscenter highlights. Watching these kids spell words you can’t pronounce captured the attention of viewers all over.

1. The World’s Strongest Man Competition

This is actually one of the more highly watched sporting events by ESPN’s mainstream demographic: the 18-35 year olds. The Strongest Man competition gets mainstream coverage consistently from ESPN. The keg toss and vehicle pulls are two of the more popular events that pair several competitors against one another in heats.

ESPN has broadcast thousands of different sports in their illustrious history, but these are without a doubt five of the most interesting we’ve seen.

There are athletes out there who refuse to play while hurt. Current examples include Philadelphia 76ers center Andrew Bynum and Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose. However, there are also athletes who will do whatever it takes to get onto the field to help their teams win, athletes who play with more than a few bruises. These guys are the definition of tough and would just wrap their injuries in some athletic tape ankle and call it good.

Two of the best examples of players who did not let injuries stop them from playing are both NFL quarterbacks.

Brett Favre was the ultimate gladiator on the football field, playing through more injuries than most people have suffered in their entire lives. He suffered multiple injuries to his throwing hand, including a chronic thumb injury that forced him to wear a splint on the thumb of his throwing hand that caused him great discomfort when throwing the ball. He was once suffering from so much pain during his playing career that he developed an addiction to Vicodin, an affliction that still didn’t stop him from setting an NFL record for consecutive starts.

Another gold standard for athletes playing through pain was former Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair. McNair was a more mobile quarterback than Favre, using his speed to extend plays when the pocket created by his offensive line failed to protect him for an adequate amount of time to make the throw he desired.

One downfall of a mobile quarterback is that, when they leave the pocket, they are often unprotected and more susceptible to taking big hits from bigger and stronger players in the open field. This was where McNair suffered numerous injuries, including a gruesome combination of broken ribs and a bruised sternum from repeated helmet shots to the chest. He was undeterred by the injuries, playing through them and continuing to win games while seriously hurt.

While basketball players often receive criticism for refusing to play while injured, Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant dispelled that myth by playing out a game this season with a torn Achilles tendon. He even took free throws to close out the game and win it for his team, an unbelievable display of courage and toughness.

Many athletes are accused of being lazy and selfish, and not being willing to take the necessary steps to win. However, players like Steve McNair, Brett Favre and Kobe Bryant defy that stereotype, doing whatever it takes to play while hurt and be the leaders any team would love to have.
